BMA Toys write in with news of a new license they've purchased and will be creating figures from: the 90s Zombie Comic: Deadworld...

BMA Toys have announced that they have acquired controlling interest in the comic book property, Deadworld from Caliber Comics. Deadworld was a long running horror series with over 50 issues in print with sales near 700,000 units. It tells the tale of a group of survivors in a world suffering from a supernatural holocaust in which the dead have returned to life and are led by intelligent zombies including the caustic King Zombie.

In acquiring the rights to Deadworld, BMA Toys will launch a series of toys based on the horror comic and also seek further exploitation on the property and characters. Bill Martin, president of BMA Toys, said that there are discussions continuing regarding movie and video games based on Deadworld. “Caliber had a number of possibilities going on with Deadworld, including a possible film and video game deal, and those will continue as before. Nothing will change in those negotiations except the fact, of course, that now there will be toys as part of the package.”

In addition to exploring the film and video game market, BMA Toys is also planning other exploitative avenues for Deadworld including comics, books, and internet orientated projects. “Caliber has over 50 issues in print”, said Martin, “and the majority of those are out of print and no longer available. There will be downloads available on the Internet at a substantial savings over the cover price of the comics so fans can obtain the entire run of the series.”

In addition to the issues being available for downloading, there will be a Deadworld website devoted to the long history of Deadworld which will supply information on the characters, storylines, and stories based on the world of the dead. There will be a variety of Deadworld merchandise available as well including t-shirts, hats, prints, posters, and assorted other goods.

A novel based on Deadworld is also in production. Written by Gary Reed and Gary Francis, it is the first in a series of stories and anthologies dedicated to Deadworld. Reed is the writer of many of Caliber’s titles including Baker Street which was just released by ibooks, a division of Simon and Shuster. Francis is best known for his writing on two series, Happy the Clown and Young Dracula which launched the career of Daredevil artist David Mack.

“The most obvious question we expect,” said Martin, “is whether Deadworld will launch as a comic series again. Caliber still gets numerous requests asking for a new Deadworld comic book series. We are looking for a possible publishing partner to relaunch the comic book and also exploring releasing it ourselves. We’ll just have to see.”

Chester Jacques, editor on many Deadworld issues and now VP of Public Relations of BMA Toys explains. “The last issue based in Deadworld was the second issue of King Zombie, written by Buffy the Vampire Slayer novelist, Tom Sniegoski and illustrated by Spider Man artist, Jacen Burrows . Caliber terminated any further issues based on Deadworld as they planned to relaunch the comic series to tie in with any other development such as a film, television series, or video game. An option from Maysville Pictures (George Clooney and Robert Lawrence) with distribution from Warner Bros. expired over a year ago and Caliber wanted to ensure that any comic book series would be in sync with any other venue of Deadworld.”

The actual line of figures for Deadworld hasn’t been announced as of yet but work has already begun on the King Zombie figure and details will be released shortly
