If ever there was a figure I was planning to pick up just for the magnificent base, I think it has to be this upcoming Marvel Select Dr Doom...

OK, the figure looks great, and it seems that the Marvel Select line goes from strength to strength. But the reason I want this line? It has to be that Throne base. It looks simply fantastic and worth picking up for that alone.

This figure is due out in Novembe, priced around $18 /$19

Yes, let's talk about sitting... With the hard plastic cape, how is Doom supposed to sit on his own throne????? It is a truly awesome accesorry...that will not work with either ML or MS Doom cause they can't sit. Kinda dissappointing if you ask me, especially for such a great looking figure.

why doesnt MS stick to characters that havent already been made for ML? people might be more willing to shell out 20 bucks that way.

Now if they had their thinking caps on, he would come with an extra cape molded so that he can sit on his throne. I can't tell if the knees are even articulated.

Yeah I was gonna get this figure primarily for the throne base, but it sucks that neither he nor the ML version will be able to sit in it. Maybe I'll customize Doom to have a cloth cape. Now there's a possibility.

A thoroughly unecessary endeavor, particularly when a well-done figure already exists and this version brings only the tiniest of asthetic ideas to the table (and in my opinion none are improvements). I do not wish to be too harsh, as variety and quality should never be discouraged, but really, what is the point here unless one can improve upon existing product?
Bases are all well and good, but in the end, its the faithfulness to and playability of the character that attracts my dollars (also, I liked the ML Castle turret for a megalomaniacal pose that can affix to the wall). Doom's mask here, while giving the weatherbeaten antique feel to the armor (already done by ML) sadly looks like rudely shaped plastic (and throughout the figure, a washed out non-metallic clay look) with a distinct diagonal slant to the viewer's right on the mask, giving it a melted affect that looks more careless than intentional. The expression of the mask does not really provide the insight into the character that the ML does through the faceplate (the former also lacking in its inability to come off and reveal the countenance beneath, a wonderful addition in the ML line). The textures and paints make no distinct impression and indeed in cases like the tunic, lack the interesting cross-hatching textures I find so interesting in the ML version. In addition I see no evidence that the articulation, the tiniest pet peeve of mine, but a concern nonetheless, has been improved upon from the ML version. Indeed, why include the chair if the figure is incapable of reclining? I see no reason for this figure to have been made- if it was to provide an alternate take on the figure from another company's sculptor, well, fine, I can applaud that, but aside from a compelling but useless and in the end wasted backdrop (as the figure can't even properly interact with it), it brings no showmanship, flair, or truly distinctive detail to a character that has already been represented quite well in the toy world. Why not make an earlier Kirby version, or tailor one to specifically resemble the art of John Byrne or Walt Simonson? A waste of resources and a drain to the wallet of any tortured completionist.
