M&C Toys ( 2003)
For some of you, your only experience with M&C has been in the discount isle with their GI Joe scaled figures. For avid 12” military collectors, M&C has provided an extremely inexpensive alternative to the large, high priced vehicles we generally see. Now, the old adage “you get what you pay for” must be ringing in your head. While there’s no doubting that a company like BBI or Dreams and Visions puts out some amazing quality product, M&C offers a much lower price point for army building and some innovative designs in their 12” body!
First off, let’s talk about this 3rd gen 12” body. Articulation includes a ball jointed head, pegged and hinged shoulders, mid bicep swivel cuts, an unusual elbow with double hinges and a peg, pegged and hinged wrists, mid torso ball joint, waist ball joint, pegged and hinged hips, upper thigh swivel cuts, double hinged and pegged knees and hinged ankles. The interesting thing about the shoulders and hips is that the joint pops into place as you swing it out, locking into position for posing. Then there’s that unusual elbow and knee joint. What you get is a cap attached to a hinge on the upper part of the arm. This leads to a peg attaching the forearm, leading to a hinge..so actually the cap is not attached to both parts of the arm!
The horse has got a flat paint job (so watch out for scratching when you put him in a box) with darker brown shading to accentuate the musculature. He’s articulated with a slide point at the bottom of the neck for raising and lowering, two front hip hinges, two back hip slide points, two front knee hinges and two front ankle hinges. He’s got a mane and tail made of fake hair and a saddle that attached by two adjustable elastic bands. The saddle also features functioning stirrups. You also get a simple strap bridle that the company has tide loosely into a loop that you can just slip around the figure’s hand if you don’t want to mess with it more than that. In my opinion the scale is excellent..but being a city boy I could be wrong? The figure sits square in the saddle with the help of the stirrups. The sculpt is solid and believable, helped by the aforementioned shading tricks. Little veins even run across his nose and a light gloss is used on the eyes for further realism. I guess you can lose those Barbie horses you’ve been using!
The included figure is jam packed with gear. Weapons wise you get one rifle, one automatic rifle, one handgun with holster and one machete with holder. Then you get a shovel that folds and goes into a holder you can hang from his belt, three misc packs, canteen, backpack and goggles. The two rifles even include elastic shoulder straps! As with all Power Team figures, you also get the slightly oversized dog tags. The outer gear belt attaches with a triangle shape that pops into place. Giving a tug you’ll find this puppy isn’t going anywhere. You’ve got the flack vest you can close up with a single long strip of Velcro down the front. Beneath this he’s got a belt (attaches the same as the outer, but with a square shape), three snaps in the shirt, two on the pants, removable boots, gloves and hat…all retailing for……$14.99!!!!
The one thing that struck me about the facial sculpt was that unlike other 12” military figures, this guy looks really young! Maybe it’s just me. It reminds me of the spots you see on the news of the kids over in the Middle East wishing their families a Happy Holiday.
I sincerely hope nothing bad has happened to this company, as when I went to look up extra info on the company, my browser couldn’t find the site. As this may be rectified in the near future, check out M&C Toy Centre for their whole line of Power Team Elite.
