Mega Bloks ( 2004)
Here it is kids! Mega Bloks let me tease you all with our Mass Retail show coverage but now they’ve decided it’s time for the real deal. 280 pieces come packed into a neat tin decorated with Spider-Man art and a little scene from a story line that goes along with the sets. See, Mega Bloks has a lot of faith in your imagination and is confident that you can play with their toys just fine on your own. They would like to be involved though!
To add to the playability, Mega Bloks has packed their sets with little extras. When creating the buildings and scenes, they had a loose story line in mind. In this particular story, Venom has come to New York City to create some chaos and turn Spider-Man’s life into a nightmare. Kidnapping Mary Jane is the fastest way to torment the webhead. While baiting Spider-Man, Venom is chased by police. Venom hits the street and overturns a news stand, sending the police launching off of it like a ramp. He climbs to the top of a building with his hostage to set a trap, but Spider-Man is watching. Perched atop the Daily Bugle, Spider-Man notices the building across the way isn’t fully stable and is ready to crumble from Venom’s fight in the streets. He slams into the side door of the building, which sends the balcony crashing to the street below, taking Venom with it.
In a world where we can’t convince companies that you want army builders like Cops and Thugs to fight alongside your heroes and super villains, Mega Bloks understands! If you are fighting in the city, there has to be a cop nearby! The Humvee sort of cop vehicle, also included in the set, features working wheels and steering wheel. Here’s hoping we have lots of cops, thugs and innocent bystanders in the future to get crushed under the little block buildings. YAY KIDDIE CARNAGE!
As I explained in the first out line of the Mega Bloks Marvel offerings of 2005, innovation is the password. I’ve explained the little action features of the play set. Now let me touch on the Spidey-block! This is a blue block with a web on the side next to a little red handle. Pulling the red handle brings a rope out of the block. Hitting a little red button on top sucks it back in! The best part is that little Spidey is so light that the rope easily takes him along with it.
Mega Bloks Spider-Man vs Venom set is packed with a mailbox, crumpled news paper, stone gargoyles, a flag pole, fire hydrant, an antenna and even a billboard! The set even comes with a sticker sheet to add the little ATM, street signs, manhole cover and caution paint. While the Mega Bloks Marvels figures won’t be replacing Minimates any time soon, you can’t deny their appeal. You also can’t deny the fact that these playsets are going to make excellent displays for your Minimate collection!
NOTE: This is a Pre-Production set, so the final retail set may differ slightly.
Additional Note/ 11/6: The hands of the mega bloks figures work perfectly in the minimates and fit pretty snugly. If you aren't that into the Mega Bloks guys and have been looking for a diorama, you can have the minimates swinging on all of the items in the set like the antenna, the flagpole and most importantly, that spidey zip line block.
